About Chevalier Theatre

The City of Medford’s Chevalier Theatre is one of the Boston area’s newly rediscovered gems, a historical landmark, a memorial to a military hero, and an anchor institution for Medford Square.

Chevalier Theatre was built in 1939 by the Works Progress Administration as part of the Medford High School complex and dedicated to Godfrey Chevalier, a pioneering World War I era Navy pilot. It was preserved as a municipal auditorium when a new high school was built elsewhere in the city in 1970 and the adjacent old high school became condominiums.

Chevalier is the sixth largest stage theater in the metro Boston area with a seating capacity of 1,850. Most striking inside is the double elliptical ceiling with its striking recessed lighting, a design that adds to the enormous feeling of spaciousness and grandeur. Subtle art-deco treatment (lights, fixtures, etc.) recall the popular style of the early 20th century.

Since 2018, Chevalier Theater has been operated for the City of Medford by Bill Blumenreich Presents. The company also manages the Wilbur Theater in Boston, and programs the entertainment at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut and many other venues across New England as well as Las Vegas.

The Chevalier show lineup regularly includes nationally and internationally known musical and comedy acts, plus family shows, speakers, and community and civic events that draw audiences from throughout the Greater Boston area as well as New Hampshire and Maine.
